“PRISONERS OF THE GHOSTLAND is the most “out-there” movie at the festival—of course it stars Nicolas Cage. Japanese director Sion Sono’s film is a post-apocalyptic vision inspired by Mad Max movies, westerns, samurai films, the cult classic EL TOPO, Elvis’ leather ’68 Comeback Special costume, ESCAPE FROM NEW YORK, and the image of its star, Cage (with editing by Taylor Levy). He plays a bankrobber with a guilty conscience who’s sent into the wasteland to retrieve the escaped “niece” (Sofia Boutella) of a local landlord called The Governor (cult favorite Bill Moseley). It’s more weird than satisfying, but Cage fans and connoisseurs of the bizarre should consider it a must-see.”
