“Shot by Bill Kirstein, who shot Sora’s Ryuichi Sakamoto | Opus, a documentary that serves as a swan song for the brilliant composer – who also happens to be the director’s father – many of these themes are captured indelibly in some of the year’s best shots. We see two boys standing on opposite sides of the street, in different lighting, a shot that might be considered overt and on-the-nose if not for its raw beauty (especially when paired with Lia Ouyang Rusli’s techno score, a marvel). The film is littered with images like this; you want to put the entire thing in a frame to hang for all to see.”
